Before each Jewish holiday, one way my family and I prepare is by listening to lots of music, usually while we’re cooking and getting the house ready. So, what are we spinning this Passover while we cook up the chicken soup? Here’s our list:
Seder Song Revival
A brand new CD of mostly original tunes from this soulful singer/songwriter. One of my faves. Perfect for children and adults of all ages.
Paul Zim’s Passover Sing-a-Long
We’ve been listening to Paul Zim’s holiday music for years. Traditional Hebrew songs with a children’s chorus. Wonderful for kids of all ages and a great way to learn the traditional repertoire.
A Taste of Passover
Put some klezmer into your life! My teacher,Hankus Netsky, is the Artistic Director of this CD that features Theodore Bikel, the Klezmer Conservatory Band and musicians from the New England Conservatory. This will get you out of your chair and it even includes a recipe for perfect matzo balls! For all ages.
This high energy take on old family favorites is lots of fun for everyone, especially the little guys. Some songs, such as Let My People Go and Elijah Rock, borrow from the tradition of African American spirituals, which I personally love.
The Socalled Seder: A Hip Hop Haggadah
If you’re into rap and hip hop then you’ll want to check out this fresh take on the Passover Seder. Includes some freestyling by Matisyahu and other guests. For adults and older children.
A Passover Seder Festival
A classic from the soaring tenor, this album is for those who love the art of traditional chazzanut(cantorial singing). This CD includes seder explanations.
Celebrate with Cindy
This has been on and off the rotation in our car for years. This classic CD that spans the entire Jewish year. Paley combines Hebrew and English songs in short arrangements. Perfect for the little guys.
While this is not a CD, I wanted to include it because my children (especially my three-year-old) play it all year. There’s nothing fancy here but it’s well done and a fun addition to your seder table.
